Washington State currently has eleven designated foreign trade zones. These are legally secured areas outside the nation's custom territory which operate as duty free areas.
Foreign and domestic goods may be processed or stored without payment of customs duties and without application of certain other regulations normally applied to customs entries. Materials may be juggled, reassembled, repackaged, manipulated, processed, used in manufacture or stored in the Foreign Trade Zone.
In King County, all 1,400 acres of the Port of Seattle's maritime and aviation properties are designated as a foreign trade zone.
